Stephanie Meadow the Irish golfer began her third Olympics with teeing off at the French golf course. Meadow and her fellow team Ireland golfer Leona Maguire arrived on Saturday. They got to hit a few balls on Sunday. They were able to witness the crowd’s enthusiasm in the men’s tournament. Hoping to receive the same amount of support Meadow said, “ That’s pretty awesome. And obviously Viktor (Perez) on Sunday, the French, and that’s just something when a country comes together and people can unite like that, it’s really special.”
Not a good start
But Meadow and Maguire had a bumpy start. They opened with a six-over 78s in the tournament. Compromising their medal dreams. They were lacking their top forms, finishing tied for 50th in the 60-strong field. Meadow was struggling from the start dropping several of her shots at the second, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth. Before bogeys at the 10th and 12th. Meadow did finish with a birdie on 18th.
A very tough golf course
Meadow in her interview with BBC Sports NI was saying “ My whole life has been about representing my country and playing good golf. I’m proud to be here and hopefully I can have a better day tomorrow. It’s a very tough golf course.”
Meadow also adds “ I was curious to see today. I was here on Saturday and Sunday with the guys. I was curious what we were gonna get and the French have come out in full force. Everyone really has come out in full force. It’s fantastic for women’s golf. What a stage we have unbelievable players and they’re going to see it this week.”
The Irish golfer and her team seems to be hopeful. It remains to be seen what Le Golf National has in store for her and her teammates
