Kayla Kosmalski, a now 18 year old High school graduate made history when she was crowned Miss Delaware Teen USA on April 28, 2024, becoming the first woman in any state of USA or Miss Universe organisation with down syndrome to win a title. But as Kayla says on her website kaylakosmalski.com, her down syndrome is the least interesting thing about her.
The Inspirational Kayla Kosmalski
Kosmalski is also an advocate of rights and inclusivity of people with disabilities. Along with that she’s a varsity cheerleader, a member of National Honor Society and she maintains a 3.7gpa whilst taking honor classes. She shares that her passion in life is in performing arts. Plus she has starred in the film “I Win”.
The ABLE Act
Kosmalski’s list of merits does not end there. How cool would it be to have a law in your name? Well that’s exactly what happened when Rick and Amy Kosmalski realised a flaw in the law. Kosmalskis wanted to save up for their daughter’s education and other needs. The only problem was a Medicaid rule that prevented Kayla from a tax-advantaged account. It had a limit of $2000 on assets over which she could lose social security and Medicaid benefits.
Then came in the ABLE ( Achieving a Better Life Experience) Act. Aiding persons with disabilities to financial security and a better life. The fund allows to save for housing, education, transportation and much more. Now persons like Kayla could be more financially independent in the future.
Showing the world Everyone Belongs
Kosmalski’s victory at the pageant opens up new avenues for people with disabilities and Down Syndrome. Kayla ,just like any teen, is quite active on TikTok and uses the platform to spread awareness and showcase her many talents. In one of her TikTok video she says, “ the only disability in the world is a bad attitude” and “I will show the world that EVERYONE BELONGS”.
